The Indianapolis Colts and Tennesse Titans meet in Nashville with a playoff berth on the line Sunday night.
It’s nearly a miracle that the Colts only have to win one game to make it into the playoffs. Indianapolis started the season 1-5 and was destined for another year with one of the league’s worst records. But the Colts reeled off five straight wins and have gone 8-1 over the last nine games.
Under first-year head coach Frank Reich, Andrew Luck has seen a resurgence. After missing all of 2017 with a shoulder injury, it took some time for Luck to get back in a rhythm, but he has thrown 20 touchdowns and only six interceptions over the nine-game stretch.

It’s safe to say everything has gone the Colts’ way as of late, and last week was a prime example of that. Trailing by as many as 14 at one point, the Colts came back to defeat the New York Giants 28-27 with Luck leading them to a touchdown drive with just 55 seconds left.
On the offensive side of the ball, Indianapolis has also seen good seasons from tight end Eric Ebron and rookie guard Quenton Nelson. Ebron has 12 receiving touchdowns, which is the most among tight ends and the third-most in the league. He and Nelson are the Colts’ representatives for the Pro Bowl.
On the other side of the ball, the Colts have seen great things from linebacker Darius Leonard. The rookie leads the league in combined tackles (155) and has seven sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception this season.
Tennessee’s season has been a roller coaster. The Titans have had three winning streaks and two losing streaks this season. They’re currently on a four-game winning streak with wins over the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants and Washington Redskins.
In their recent win over the Redskins, the Titans needed a 16-point fourth quarter to win 25-16.
While they did get the win, the Titans may have lost their starting quarterback for the season finale. Marcus Mariota re-injured his thumb, an injury that caused him to miss two starts earlier this year, and his status is up in the air for Sunday.
If Mariota can’t go, Blaine Gabbert will start in his place. Gabbert has three touchdowns, two interceptions and an 80.8 passer rating in five games that he’s thrown a pass in this season.
Luckily for Tennessee, it still has its ground game to rely on. Derrick Henry has been on a tear in December, rushing for 532 yards and eight touchdowns in four games this month. His 966 rushing yards this season and Dion Lewis’ 517 rushing yards helps give Tennessee the fifth-best rushing attack in the league.
However, that strong rushing attack failed to do much in the first matchup against the Colts this season. Tennessee ran for just 87 yards on 25 carries (3.5 yards per carry) and the Colts dominated in a 38-10 win.
Can the Titans ground game recover or will we see a repeat on Sunday night? Either way, we should be in for a good one. The winner will move onto the playoffs and can win the AFC South with a Houston Texans loss while the loser’s season will end.
Colts vs. Titans head-to-head stats
In the first matchup between the two teams, the Titans gave up a season-high 38 points. It’s only one of two times the Titans have allowed more than 30 points this season.
Both teams have done okay against top competition this season. The Colts are 3-3 against teams with a .500 record or better and the Titans are 4-4 against teams with a .500 record or better.
The Titans have the fifth-best rushing offense in football. But they go up against the Colts, who have the eighth-best rushing defense in the league. The Colts won that battle in the first matchup, allowing just 87 rushing yards.
Since turning things around, the Colts are averaging 27.6 points per game. The Titans are allowing just 11.8 points per game over their four-game winning streak.
Colts vs. Titans betting odds
The Colts are 3.5-point favorites on the road. The over/under is set at 43 points.
