Injuries: This is about as healthy as two teams could be headed into a Super Bowl. The Rams entered the NFC title game without a single player with a designation on the injury report and didn’t sustain any significant issues in their victory against the Saints. Patriots defensive end Deatrich Wise (ankle) missed the divisional round against the Chargers but was removed from the final injury report before the AFC Championship Game, so his designation as an inactive player goes down as a healthy scratch. In fact, all 14 players declared as inactive for both the Rams and the Patriots in their respective conference title games were healthy scratches.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

1. Experience versus inexperience: Bill Belichick is widely considered the best NFL coach of this century, and some regard him as the greatest of all time. He’s 66 years old. Tom Brady is 41. Together, this will be their ninth trip to a Super Bowl. Rams coach Sean McVay is just 32 – making him the youngest head coach ever to play in the title game. Rams quarterback Jared Goff, 24, is 17 years younger than Brady. Only a handful of Los Angeles players – including wide receiver Brandin Cooks, cornerback Aqib Talib and running back C.J. Anderson – have played in a Super Bowl. It helps that Los Angeles has an uber-experienced defensive coordinator in Wade Philips, who helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50. Still, this is about as big a gap as you can have between two teams in experience at this level.

2. Hold the line: The play of the Patriots offensive line has been superb down the stretch. Against the Chiefs, the squad that tied for the league lead in sacks (52) in the regular season, New England allowed just one hit on Brady and no sacks. Against the Chargers, they also didn’t allow a sack and permitted just two quarterback hits. Center David Andrews and guards Shaq Mason and guards Joe Thuney have been especially solid. Against a Rams pass rush – including defensive tackles Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh – that made life miserable for Saints quarterback Drew Brees in the second half of the NFC Championship Game, the Pats will need to continue their impressive stretch. To help with that, don’t be surprised if Brady looks to throw the ball quickly to neutralize the pass rush, just as offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had had him do frequently throughout the postseason.

3. Stopping play action: An interesting matchup will feature New England’s secondary that relies on man coverage and has shined, with cornerback Stephon Gilmore and safety Devin McCourty being the leaders. But the Rams passing attack relies on the effectiveness of the rushing game due to the frequency of play-action passes. According to Pro Football Reference, more than a third of Goff’s passes this season came out of play action, the highest rate in the NFL. If Los Angeles can get running backs Todd Gurley and C.J. Anderson going and if that play action can help freeze New England’s corners, those factors might give Goff enough time to find some targets down the field.

The Patriots will win if …

Brady is his normal self. The 41-year-old certainly seemed to dip a bit during the regular season, but he was terrific in the Patriots’ win over the Chargers. Then he dipped a little with some questionable plays — like a goal-line interception — against the Chiefs. He can’t make those kinds of mistakes in the Super Bowl. But there’s something about this time of the year that tends to bring out the best in Brady. If he brings it against the Rams, the Patriots should be just fine.

The Rams will win if …

They are able to pressure Brady into making mistakes and win the turnover battle. The Patriots excel when they’re able to keep things close and win the situational battles; it’s their bread and butter. The Rams have to find a way to force a few errant throws or fumbles, then capitalize with points at the other end, in order to build some momentum and get the Patriots out of their normal rhythm.

PREDICTION

All year long, the verdict has been that this Patriots team isn’t as good as some past versions. Nevertheless, Brady and Belichick and Co. are right back in a third straight Super Bowl. Smart money doesn’t bet against the Patriots — they’re just too darn consistent to count them out, ever.

AFC vs. NFC
Date & Time Sunday January 27, 2019, 3:00 PM (EST)
Location
Camping World Stadium
Orlando, Florida
The Line
The Line: NFC -1 — Over/Under: 57

The AFC and NFC meet Sunday in the 2019 NFL Pro Bowl at Camping World Stadium.

The AFC will be led by Los Angeles Chargers coach Anthony Lynn, who took his team to the AFC Divisional Game with 12 regular season wins. Offensively, the AFC will have quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes, Andrew Luck and Deshaun Watson, while the top skill position players include James Conner, Tyreek Hill, Keenan Allen and Jarvis Landry. Defensively is where the AFC will likely really shine with difference makers such as Von Miller, Xavien Howard, Jalen Ramsey and Myles Garrett round out the starting unit. The AFC is a little weak in the running back department and has two of its original quarterbacks (Philip Rivers and Tom Brady) not participating, but the defense is young, and youth can be key in these type of meaningless games. You want players who are honored to participate and excited to put on a show. There’s a lot of players on that AFC defense who are still making a name for themselves, and that could be key for that side producing a victory. I expect a fast, youthful defense that wants to change the whole feel of the Pro Bowl.

Los Angeles Rams vs New Orleans Saints
The NFC will be led by Jason Garrett, who took the Dallas Cowboys to the NFC Divisional Game and has won double-digit games in three of the last five years. The NFC quarterbacks will be Drew Brees, Russell Wilson and Mitchell Trubisky, while the key skill position players are Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, Saquon Barkley, Davante Adams and George Kittle. A really explosive offensive unit with proven quarterbacks, arguably the best two running backs in the league and highly productive receivers who are as reliable as they come. The NFC defense will be missing a lot of starters due to pull outs or guys playing in the Super Bowl, but Kyle Fuller, Patrick Peterson, DeMarcus Lawrence, Bobby Wagner and Anthony Barr will help keep things afloat. The feel you get with the NFC are the usual suspects. Guys who have been there done that over the years and take pride in the conferences dominate over the AFC over the years.

There’s no line yet due to possible more players dropping out or reserves needing to be added. We know the NFC is probably going to be favored yet again and the total is sure to be high. It’s the same song and dance in these type of games. The play is usually the over, and I often like to take free points in meaningless all-star type games. The goal in these games is to have fun and leave healthy. Free points is where I usually lean.

This total is pretty low when you consider seven of the last 11 Pro Bowls have produced at least 60 points. Defense is not really an option in these type of games, and while the last two years have been pretty low scoring, the overall history of this game has been a back and forth contest. Instead of picking one team when there’s no logical reason to be on one side over the other when you consider both sides are loaded with talent, I’ll be on the side of points and back the over.

Manny Pacquiao might be 40 years old, but he’s still one of the biggest draws in boxing. On Saturday in fabulous Las Vegas, he’ll face another one of the sport’s stars, Adrien Broner, with Pacquiao’s WBA Welterweight Championship on the line. Broner is also a former WBA welterweight champion and the 29-year-old is still in his prime, 11 years younger than his adversary. Despite the age gap, Pacquiao is a -400 favorite in the latest Pacquiao vs. Broner odds, up from an open of -280. That means you’d need to risk $400 to win $100. Broner, meanwhile, is at +300, meaning you’d only need to risk $100 to win $300 on the underdog. Before you head to the window to make any Pacquiao vs. Broner picks, check out the latest predictions from SportsLine boxing insider Peter Kahn.

A fight game veteran with over 20 years of experience as a manager, promoter and adviser, Kahn has his finger on the pulse of what’s going on inside and outside the ring. He can be heard weekly as co-host of “The Fight Guys” podcast on the SB Nation Radio Network.

This is the same expert who called Shawn Porter upsetting Danny Garcia in September, which paid +140 on the money line, and called the GGG vs. Canelo draw. Now he’s dialed in on Pacquiao-Broner and just locked in his top boxing picks. You can only see them at SportsLine.

For Saturday’s showdown in Las Vegas, Kahn knows that one of Pacquiao’s big advantages will be his ability to use his quickness to outflank the more defensive Broner. He’ll piece together combinations that score big with judges, which Kahn thinks could put Broner in constant jeopardy.

Manny Pacquiao vs Adrien Broner Boxing Fight Night 2019

“Pacquiao is going to come forward, press the action, and keep Broner on the defensive by using his speed and combination punching,” Kahn told SportsLine.

As the underdog, Kahn also knows that Broner will have his work cut out against a more technically sound fighter. However, Broner is an excellent counter-puncher, which makes him extremely dangerous against a fighter like Pacquiao who is sure to throw plenty of hay-makers. And Broner has been wildly successful, with 24 knockouts in 33 wins against just three losses, while Pacquiao has dropped four of his last 10 bouts.

“Broner is successful when he can make his opponents miss and use his long left hook to land at will,” Kahn told SportsLine. “He has a solid chin and will not quit. He might make it ugly or rough if he can break Pacquiao’s rhythm.”

Kahn has scouted Broner vs. Pacquiao from every angle and locked in his best bets. We can tell you he likes the fight to go all 12 rounds, but his bigger play is on the winner. He’s identified the critical x-factor that makes one fighter a must-back. He’s only sharing what it is, and who to back, at SportsLine.

Watch AFC Championship NFL Sunday Football New England Patriots vs Kansas City Chiefs 2019 NFL online free live streaming high quality(HD) broadcast on Sunday,January 20 ,2019 at 6:40 p.m. ET . It’s hard to look at this year’s AFC Championship between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs as anything other than a potential changing of the guard. Tom Brady, 41, will be eyeing an unprecedented ninth Super Bowl appearance; to do it, he’ll need to rise to the challenge of 23-year-old emerging superstar Patrick Mahomes. Perhaps the greatest ever to play the sport at his position will be pitted against the man who may define it for the next generation.

But the rivalry runs far deeper than just those two men. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is looking to erase his record of playoff futility by finally beating the game’s best on the other sideline in Bill Belichick. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce hopes to displace an aging, injury-prone Rob Gronkowski as the AFC’s best at the position. And despite the Patriots’ undefeated home record this season (9-0) it’s the Chiefs’ fans at Arrowhead who have one last opportunity to prove what home-field advantage in the postseason is all about.

Their last matchup, a 43-40 Patriots victory in Foxborough, was easily one of the best in the NFL this season. Expect Sunday’s game to bring the same amount of offensive firepower and late-game drama with a berth in Super Bowl LIII on the line.

AFC Championship: New England at Kansas City

Kickoff: Sunday, Jan. 20 at 6:40 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

Spread: Chiefs -3

Three Things to Watch

1. Can Mahomes keep from making mistakes?

In this type of game, it’s fairly clear what you’ll get from the Patriots’ Tom Brady. A roller-coaster regular season was put to rest last week against the Chargers; 343 passing yards and no turnovers meant the outcome was never in doubt. The Chiefs can’t expect to capitalize on his mistakes although Brady did have a lost fumble in their matchup earlier this season.

The real focus is on whether Patrick Mahomes can keep it together. On paper, he had one of the best statistical seasons in history with 50 touchdowns and nearly 5,100 passing yards. He did nothing to cost his team in a cruise control-type performance against the Colts in Arrowhead last week.

But the Patriots in the playoffs are a different story altogether. The Chiefs were mortally wounded in their regular-season matchup through multiple mistakes by Mahomes early on. Two interceptions led to seven Patriots points and cost the Chiefs seven more at the end of the first half. It’s enough to make the difference in a game where we’ll count the number of punts on one hand.

“We didn’t feel good,” Mahomes said this week about the Patriots’ loss earlier this year. “We didn’t play our best, especially early in the game. And when you play teams of this caliber, with this much history of knowing how to win and capitalizing on people’s mistakes, you can’t come back and win games like that.”

“For us, we have to learn from that, know we can’t make those mistakes. It’s going to be a dogfight for the entire game.”

Can he outduel the Patriots’ secondary this time? Philip Rivers never looked comfortable last week and New England’s defensive unit heads in with momentum. The Patriots know how to create takeaways in the playoffs. It’s imperative Mahomes puts those demons behind them by striking early and often in the first half.

2. Can Sony Michel outduel Damien Williams?

You might be surprised to know all four of the Chiefs’ touchdowns last week came on the ground. After releasing Kareem Hunt last month, many felt their rushing game would struggle but Williams has proven up to the task. The fifth-year player has stepped in admirably, posting a higher yards per carry average than Hunt (5.1 to 4.6) and two 100-yard rushing efforts. (That included 129 yards against the Colts last week). Hunt, by comparison, had just one 100-yard rushing game this year despite his speed and explosiveness.

Is that more because of the Chiefs’ offensive line or is it Williams himself? The answer is a little bit of both. But the Patriots’ defense will offer a stiffer test than the Colts’ front line. New England held Pro Bowl running back Melvin Gordon to just 15 rushing yards and the Chargers to 19 total. Ranked 11th against the run, allowing 112.3 rushing yards per game over the course of a full season that number drops to 65.0 when you include just the last three weeks.

Kansas City, meanwhile, has a rushing defense that ranked 27th in the NFL. It provides a make-or-break opportunity for rookie Sony Michel to put up some big numbers once again after a masterful 129-yard, three-touchdown performance last week. Michel, who lost part of his season due to injury, has been left in the shadows while other rookies like Baker Mayfield and Saquon Barkley have taken center stage. But they’re not playing this late into January. Michel might be the most important person on the field for a Patriots offense that finally appeared to loosen up with the chains constantly moving on the ground.

3. All Tyreek, all the time

Tyreek Hill was unhinged the last time these teams played. Seven catches, 142 yards and three touchdowns almost singlehandedly kept the Chiefs in the game. Last week’s postseason contest was a bit more pedestrian (eight catches, 72 yards) but a bounce-back performance should be expected.

Travis Kelce may be the Chiefs’ most reliable receiver but Hill is the one who can score at any given moment. The fastest player on the field can get more yards after the catch than anyone else in this game when given space and he’s already proved he can outrun the Patriots’ secondary.

This 75-yard touchdown play from the first matchup truly highlights the explosiveness of the Chiefs’ offense when both he and Mahomes are on the same page. It’s why the Patriots can’t fall behind in this game but the Chiefs will never feel like they’re out of it.

X-Factor: Kicking Game

Stephen Gostkowski is one of the game’s most reliable kickers. But a 27-for-32 season obscured the fact he was just six-for-11 on kicks over 40 yards in length.

During a year where long field goals have become the norm, not the exception, that may give the edge to another changing-of-the-guard figure: 23-year-old Harrison Butker. Butker was eight-for-11 on kicks 40 yards and longer while nailing a 54-yarder just a few weeks ago against Seattle. He also has the advantage of kicking within his own stadium during a night where the wind will make a difference (forecast to be 10-15 mph).

One miss from either kicker could be all that’s needed to determine the outcome.

Final Analysis

Conventional wisdom says the Chiefs should come out on top in this one. It’s a youthful team playing at home and hungry for revenge after their national stub-a-toe moment against the Patriots earlier this year. Andy Reid, 1-4 in championship games is too good a head coach to get shut out of the Super Bowl with this team.

And yet. The Patriots, labeled as rare underdogs have embraced that mentality with a bear hug. Julian Edelman’s Twitter posted a hype video followed by T-Shirts fans could order with the hashtag #BETAGAINSTUS. It’s the type of us against the world mentality that plays well within a Bill Belichick locker room and the same type of emotional boost the Eagles used against them in Super Bowl LII (with great success, I might add).

Add in Tom Brady, who seems to be playing with a chip on his shoulder amid criticism his play has slipped at 41 and it’s hard to count the Patriots out. They need everything to break right for them to pull this out but we’ve seen that type before from them in the postseason, haven’t we?

The Los Angeles Rams make their second trip to the Crescent City to battle the New Orleans Saints this season as the top two seeds meet in the NFC Championship game on Sunday. The Rams (14-3) and Saints (14-3) find themselves one victory away from a spot in Super Bowl LIII after taking care of business at home last week in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Los Angeles trampled Dallas 30-22 out on the West Coast last Saturday. The Rams’ tandem of C.J. Anderson and Todd Gurley piled up 238 rushing yards and three touchdowns while averaging more than six yards per carry (on 39 total attempts). Los Angeles controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage, limiting Dallas to just 50 rushing yards, and dominated time of possession (36:13 to 23:47).

New Orleans stumbled through the first quarter of its game this past Sunday against Philadelphia. Drew Brees threw an interception on the first play from scrimmage and the Eagles jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead. But a Marshon Lattimore pick of Nick Foles started to turn the tide, as the Saints’ offense found its footing and the defense shut Philadelphia out the rest of the way. After a shaky start, the Brees-to-Michael Thomas connection got going as New Orleans went on to score the final 20 points of the game.

These two teams met in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome back in Week 9 as the Saints won a high-scoring affair 45-35. The offenses combined for 970 yards with Brees (346 yards, 4 TDs) and Jared Goff (391, 3) both filling up the stat sheet. Thomas (211 yards) also made his presence felt as New Orleans handed the Rams their first loss of the season. That game ended up being the tiebreaker for the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

NFC Championship: Los Angeles at New Orleans

Kickoff: Sunday, Jan. 20 at 3:05 p.m. ET

TV: FOX

Spread: Saints -3.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Michael Thomas vs. Rams’ secondary

Last week against Philadelphia, Thomas hauled in 12 catches for 171 yards and a touchdown. The receptions were his highest since Week 9 when he went for 211 and a score on 12 grabs against the Rams. Will the All-Pro continue to have success against Los Angeles’ defense?

The Rams’ secondary will include a key component who was missing from the teams’ previous matchup. Starting cornerback Aqib Talib will start this Sunday after missing half of the regular season (Weeks 4-12) because of an ankle injury.

How much of a difference will Talib make? In the nine games (including last week’s playoff win) Talib has played this season, Los Angeles is giving up 206.3 passing yards and 17.7 points per game. Without him, those numbers jump to 272.6 and 30.8.

Additionally, no one should forget about the on-going squabble between Rams’ cornerback Marcus Peters and Saints’ head coach Sean Payton. Those two bantered during the first meeting in November. The feisty rhetoric continued this week. Despite what Peters mentioned, it seems unlikely that these two will sit down together to enjoy some gumbo. Will the Saints’ receivers go out and back up their coach’s trash talk?

Los Angeles Rams vs New Orleans Saints Free Online Live
2. Todd Gurley/C.J. Anderson vs. Saints’ front seven

Gurley’s production dipped toward the end of the regular season as he dealt with a knee injury that caused him to miss the last two games. Before that he failed to gain 50 rushing yards in Weeks 14 or 15, but he did remain a factor in the passing game (combined 13 catches for 106 yards).

But the positive for the Rams was that Gurley’s absence opened up an opportunity for C.J. Anderson, who the team signed following his release by Carolina. The former 1,000-yard rusher showed he was still capable of carrying the load, as he went for nearly 300 yards in the final two games of the regular season and then led the team with 123 in the Divisional Round win over Dallas. Not to be outdone, Gurley showed he was plenty healthy by going for 115 and averaging a robust 7.2 yards per carry against the Cowboys.

The duo will look to keep things going against a New Orleans defense that finished second in the regular season vs. the run (80.2 ypg). In the first meeting, the Rams managed 92 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries with Gurley responsible for most of the damage (68 yards, TD, 5.2 ypc). Anderson wasn’t with Los Angeles then but you can pretty much expect head coach Sean McVay will call on both of his backs on Sunday.

3. Saints’ offensive line vs. Rams’ defensive line

New Orleans has done a superb job of keeping Drew Brees upright. He took all but a small percentage of the snaps from center in 15 games during the regular season with opponents registering a total of 17 sacks. No other quarterback started as many games yet was sacked so few times this season. To put it another way, he was sacked during just 3.4 percent of his pass attempts. That’s the second-lowest rate in the NFL even though Brees attempted nearly 500 passes (489, 16th).

Los Angeles has a formidable trio that anchors its defensive line. It starts with Aaron Donald, the All-Pro who is the front-runner to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight year after racking up 20.5 sacks, 25 tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in the regular season. Ndamukong Suh has done his part clogging things in the middle while Michael Brockers chips in as the other starting defensive end. These three have started all 17 games together and are tasked with making plays behind the line of scrimmage and getting pressure on Brees, even if it doesn’t result in a sack. Their effectiveness will dictate how the linebackers are used by veteran defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

Can the Saints’ offensive line hold up against the Rams’ fearsome threesome? Three Saints’ linemen were flagged for holding versus the Eagles. Andrus Peat struggled in particular, with two holding calls against him. He is expected to play Sunday in spite of his broken hand, which clearly hampered him last week. Considering that Donald leads the NFL in sacks and tackles for a loss, New Orleans cannot let him dominate a the point of attack and take over the game, even if that means double-teaming him.

Final Analysis

The NFC bracket held to form to give us a No. 1 vs. No. 2 championship game. As a result, fans will witness two evenly matched teams that are tied for the best records in the NFL. If the regular-season matchup foreshadows what will happen in this one, another high-scoring contest awaits.

But this game appears headed for a closer finish than what transpired back in November. The Saints had a 21-point lead late in the first half before a field goal made it 35-17. The Rams battled all the way back to tie the game with less than 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter only to watch New Orleans score the next 10 points over a three-minute span. Sunday’s matchup figures to stay tight for the duration and may even need overtime to decide the winner.

The Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles took very different paths to Sunday’s NFC Wild Card game. But they share one common thread that binds them together: Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

It’s two Reid disciples — Matt Nagy and Doug Pederson — who square off this Sunday in a game that features two of the conference’s hottest teams. As a first-year head coach, Nagy produced a worst-to-first turnaround for the Bears in the NFC North. The former Chiefs offensive coordinator did it with defense, his team allowing a league-best 17.7 points per game while winning nine of their last 10 contests. A 12-4 record earned them their first division title (and playoff berth) in eight years.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles, led by Pederson, Reid’s former assistant in both Philadelphia and later Kansas City, enter the postseason scorching hot. They’ve won five of six and three in a row behind the steady play of backup quarterback Nick Foles, seeking a second straight season of magic. The Super Bowl LII MVP has led an offensive surge since the team’s only loss in this stretch, to the Cowboys left them at 6-7 and put an NFC East division title out of reach. But Foles came in and has helped the team produced 28.7 points per game in matchups that included two playoff teams (Rams and Texans) to get the Eagles’ season turned around.

Both coaches know each other well, the type of relationship in which you might say Nagy was almost a Pederson disciple himself. When Pederson was the offensive coordinator for Andy Reid’s Chiefs, Nagy was the Quality Control coach. The duo followed that pattern from the beginning of their careers, Nagy always sliding into the role Pederson left behind in Reid’s system.

“He got that Super Bowl,” Nagy said earlier this week. “I’m trying to follow his lead here.”

Can the Bears, a trendy Super Bowl pick, ride the exact same wave the Eagles did last year to an NFL championship? Or will Pederson still hold the upper hand in this coaching connection?

NFC Wild Card Playoff: Philadelphia at Chicago

Kickoff: Sunday, Jan. 6 at 4:40 p.m. ET

TV: NBC

Spread: Bears -6

Three Things To Watch

1. Nick Foles’ health

Foles left the Washington Redskins game early last Sunday with pain in his ribs. At the time, the game was well in hand, leaving Nate Sudfeld to throw his first career NFL touchdown pass in a 24-0 shutout win. But Sudfeld against the Bears, in any capacity? It’s hard to see the Eagles coming out on top.

The diagnosis for Foles was bruised ribs, not a break, leaving him in position to play Sunday. But pressure now mounts for the Eagles’ offensive line, a group that suffered through a season of inconsistency. Despite Sunday’s dominant performance by the team they still allowed three sacks to a Redskins defense with little to play for.

The Bears, whose defense produced an NFC-leading 50 sacks this year present a more serious challenge. Pro Bowl linebacker Khalil Mack is perhaps the best outside edge rusher in the NFL, leading the team in sacks (12.5), QB Hits (18) and forced fumbles (six).

“One on one, you’re not going to slow him down,” Philadelphia head coach Doug Pederson said earlier this week. “It’s going to [force] you to do different things with tight ends, do different things with running backs. It can force you to change your thinking.”

Two tackles, 36-year-old Pro Bowler Jason Peters and Lane Johnson, will be tasked with keeping Mack at bay. Peters is one of the all-time greats but has shown his age at times this season, battling a myriad of injuries. Johnson has had a weird year, a yo-yo between a 9 out of 10 and a 2 on the performance scale depending on the week.

He’ll need to be a 10 for the Eagles to pull this one out. Foles can’t produce another miracle playoff run if he’s not capable of making it through four quarters of play. But if the Eagles protect, opportunities exist. The Bears ranked eighth in the NFL pass defense, a slight weakness (if you could call it that) and Foles has thrown for an average of 320 yards the past three weeks. The Eagles will drive down the field and score points.

2. The Bears’ run vs. the Eagles’ rush

The Eagles’ run defense took a hit in the second half of the season. Last year’s top-ranked unit slipped to seventh this season and struggled against marquee running backs. Division rivals Saquon Barkley (Giants), Ezekiel Elliott (Cowboys) and Adrian Peterson (Redskins) all had big games against their front line.

That bodes well for the Bears and their 1-2 punch of Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen. The duo ran roughshod over the Vikings in the season finale, piling up 133 yards between them on the ground in a game that ironically opened the door for the Eagles to make the playoffs. The Bears overall have rushed for 100-plus yards in five of the past six games.

But the last week against the Redskins was also the Eagles’ best defensive effort of the year. They allowed just 89 net yards of total offense and held the ‘Skins to 21 yards rushing, a measly 1.8 yards per carry. Peterson could never get going and finished with exactly zero yards on four carries, just one month after torching the Eagles with a 90-yard touchdown run.

This battle on the front lines will be crucial early on as the Bears hope to build a lead, limiting the pressure on young quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Defensive stalwarts Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham and Jordan Hicks have to come together and make big plays early and often.

3. Mitchell Trubisky’s postseason debut

Trubisky, in just his second year in the league, will prepare to make his home playoff debut after an up-and-down regular season under center. Missing time with a shoulder injury in November, he’s had a history of struggling against top-tier opponents.

The Bears played three playoff teams this season: Seattle, New England and the Los Angeles Rams. Trubisky threw for 300-plus yards in just one of those games (New England) while throwing five touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Bears did hold on to win two of those games, utilizing their defense that produced a league-best 36 turnovers. But you’re less likely to have that type of margin of error in a playoff game, even with Foles averaging one turnover himself per contest.

Can Trubisky lead a game-winning drive when it matters? Your answer to that question should decide which way you swing in what’s bound to be the most competitive game on Wild Card Weekend.

X-Factor: Special Teams

Former Eagles kicker Cody Parkey was a bit shaky down the stretch with the Bears. He missed four of his last six kicks and never hit one longer than 50 yards this season. Jake Elliott, meanwhile, hit 14 of his final 15 after the Eagles’ bye week. He’s hit from 56 yards this season and has shown some range far beyond that, as evidenced by his franchise-record 61-yarder to win against the Giants last year.

That gives a slight edge to the Eagles on what’s supposed to be a cold, blustery day at Soldier Field. Winds are forecast out of the East at 10-15 miles an hour with stronger gusts. In a close game, particularly a defensive battle, Elliott could make a difference down the stretch.

Final Analysis

The Bears have the edge heading in with both momentum and talent. But the Eagles have what’s become this unshakable faith in Nick Foles. The backup Super Bowl MVP (how often has that sentence been written in NFL history) sits at 6-0 in must-win games with Carson Wentz on the sidelines. If he could beat the Rams on the road, a team the Bears also disposed of down the stretch, this one also feels winnable.

The key is for him to stay on the field for all four quarters. But if the Bears’ defense can be kept at bay just enough, forcing Mitchell Trubisky to win the game for them the edge should go to the experience of last year’s Super Bowl champs.

Prediction: Eagles 20, Bears 17

NFL playoff action will kick off on Sunday with the Los Angeles Chargers making the long trip east to face the Baltimore Ravens in the second AFC Wild Card game. A matchup that features two teams that should be very familiar with one another, considering their last meeting took place just a couple of weeks ago. Both teams entered that crucial Week 16 game in need of a win to stay alive in closely-contested division races. Baltimore left Los Angeles with a 22-10 victory over the Chargers, although it was closer than the score suggests.

The Ravens (10-6) would follow up with another crucial win last week, narrowly escaping disaster in a dramatic 26-24 affair against the Browns to close out the regular season with their first AFC North title since 2012 and the No. 4 seed in the AFC playoffs. It also marked Baltimore’s third consecutive win and its sixth in the last seven games behind rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson and the league’s best defense. The Ravens now face yet another difficult challenge to keep its season alive — beating the Chargers for a second time. If successful, Baltimore would extend its record to 6-0 in Wild Card games under head coach John Harbaugh.

While the Chargers (12-4) ultimately fell short of winning the AFC West, thanks in part to that loss to the Ravens, the Bolts did manage to wrap up the regular season with a 23-9 victory over the Broncos to tie for the best record in the AFC. The win in Denver also gave the Chargers a 7-0 record in games played outside of the greater Los Angeles area (they lost to the Rams in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Week 3). That bodes well for the fifth seed although Baltimore is 6-2 at home thus far. Regardless of the record, Los Angeles will need to be at its very best to get past the red-hot Ravens on Sunday afternoon.

AFC Wild Card Playoff: Los Angeles at Baltimore

Kickoff: Sunday, Jan. 6 at 1:05 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

Spread: Ravens -2.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Los Angeles’ passing game vs. Baltimore’s pass defense

Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers matched his career high for passer rating (105.5) during a standout regular season. That effort was aided by a trio of top-flight wide receivers in Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Tyrell Williams. The Los Angeles offensive line did its part as well, allowing a respectable 34 sacks in 16 games. All in all, it was a remarkable showing for one of the NFL’s most prolific passing attacks.

However, there is one game that Rivers and company would like to forget. The Week 16 loss to the Ravens was the only game all season in which Rivers failed to throw a touchdown pass. He did, however, throw two interceptions en route to his lowest passer rating (51.7) of the season. The Chargers’ talented receiving corps didn’t fare much better, struggling to gain separation against an equally talented Baltimore secondary. And the Los Angeles offensive line was, for the most part, overwhelmed and outmatched against a stellar Baltimore pass rush — surrendering four sacks, eight QB hits and allowing consistent pressure on Rivers. The Chargers will need a much-improved effort to find success in Sunday’s rematch, particularly when it comes to pass protection. That won’t come easy against the NFL’s No. 1 defense.

2. Lamar Jackson

The Ravens’ rookie will make NFL history this weekend, becoming the youngest quarterback to start a playoff game at age 21. Jackson was a major catalyst behind Baltimore’s successful run to the AFC North title, leading the Ravens to a 6-1 record down the stretch after replacing Joe Flacco as the starter. The dynamic playmaker will look to keep things rolling in his first-ever playoff start, but to do so he’ll have to tackle another first — face the same defense for a second time.

Jackson threw for a season-high 204 yards and a touchdown in the Week 16 win over Los Angeles. However, a big chunk of that came on one play, a 68-yard touchdown strike to tight end Mark Andrews. Otherwise, the Chargers did an outstanding job of limiting the dual-threat quarterback where he shines brightest — running the football. Jackson managed just 39 rushing yards on 13 carries, by far his lowest total in his starts. He also was sacked three times. Jackson is sure to be the focal point of the Bolts’ defense again on Sunday. The question is, can the Chargers contain the elusive quarterback for a second time? Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram, and the rest of the defense have that exact goal in mind. It should make for a compelling matchup.

3. A potent Baltimore ground attack

The Chargers may have been successful in limiting Jackson as a runner, but the Ravens still finished with 159 rushing yards in that Week 16 win. Fellow rookie Gus Edwards led the way with 92 yards on 14 carries (6.6 ypc) as Baltimore showed it’s more than just Jackson who can get the job done on the ground. In fact, the Ravens enter this game second in the NFL in rushing at 152.6 yards per game. But that number has ballooned to 229.5 over the last seven contests or all the games Jackson started. So while Los Angeles can take some solace in that it “limited” Baltimore’s total damage on the ground in the first meeting that task will be just as difficult the second time, especially if Jackson is able to get loose a time or two. The Chargers will need to make sure their ninth-ranked rushing defense (105.8 ypg) plays up to its potential.

Final Analysis

It’s never easy to beat an NFL team twice in the same season, a task made more difficult for the Ravens against a Chargers squad that has thrived on the road. Los Angeles is also one of the most complete teams in the league, excelling on both sides of the football. And that is exactly what the Chargers will need to do on Sunday to pull off the upset — excel on both sides of the football. This is something they failed to do in the 22-10 home loss to Baltimore in Week 16. The Ravens held Los Angeles to a season-low 198 total yards, effectively shutting down both Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon, who was coming back from a three-game absence due to a knee injury. That game also marked the only time that the Chargers failed to score at least 20 points. Expect Los Angeles to put up more points this time around, but it won’t be enough to come away with the win. Baltimore’s defense is simply too strong, particularly in the trenches, and the Ravens have the benefit of home-field advantage.

When the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks met in Week 3, no one thought the game would be a playoff preview. Fast forward four months and the two teams are set to face off in a Wild Card matchup in Dallas on Saturday night sitting just a few wins away from making the Super Bowl.

Both teams have changed a lot since that meeting in September, which Seattle won 24-13 on its home turf. The Seahawks, who started the year 0-2 and were 4-5 at one point, went 6-1 in their last seven games to finish with a 10-6 record.

Russell Wilson has once again proven himself to be one of the league’s top quarterbacks. He’s tied for third in passing touchdowns (35) and is third in passer rating (110.9).

And unlike the previous two seasons, Wilson has a strong backfield behind him. Second-year running back Chris Carson is fifth in the league in rushing yards (1,153) and tied for seventh in rushing touchdowns (nine).

To go along with the strong offensive performance, Seattle’s defense has been just as good. Defensive end Frank Clark is sixth in the league in sacks (14) and is tied for sixth in forced fumbles (four). Linebacker Bobby Wagner is fourth in combined tackles (138), leading a Seahawks defense that is 11th in defensive scoring (21.7 points per game).

Following the Week 3 loss to the Seahawks, the Cowboys fell to 1-2. Dallas eventually fell to 3-5 and its offense was looking bleak.

Insert Amari Cooper. In a mid-season trade with the Oakland Raiders, the Cowboys received Cooper for a first-round draft pick. The move revitalized the Cowboys offense, leading them to go 7-1 in the second half of the season and giving them a 10-6 record and the NFC East crown.

Cooper has 53 catches for 725 yards and six touchdowns over a nine-game stretch. Dak Prescott has had a strong second half, throwing for 1,871 yards, 11 touchdowns with a 96.7 passer rating.

The improved passing game helped complete the Cowboys offense. Ezekiel Elliott had another good season, finishing first in rushing yards (1,434) and rushing yards per game (95.6).

Coupled with their offense, Dallas has a strong defense. Rookie linebacker Leighton Vander Esch is third in combined tackles (140) and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence had 10.5 sacks this season. They lead a Cowboys defense that ranks seventh in the league and sixth in scoring (20.3 points allowed per game).

Will we get a repeat of Week 3 or can the Cowboys improved offense carry them into the Divisional Round?

Seahawks vs. Cowboys head-to-head stats
Russell Wilson is third in the league in passer rating (110.9). More specifically, Wilson has a perfect passer rating (158.3) when he targets Tyler Lockett. He and Lockett have connected 57 times for 965 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Cowboys passing defense is 22nd in opponent passer rating (95.7).
Wilson has the Cowboys’ number as he is 4-1 against them in his career, including winning his last three games against them.
Seattle leads the league in rushing (160 yards per game). The Seahawks go up against a strong rush defense in Dallas, who is fifth in rushing yards allowed (94.6 rushing yards allowed per game).
The strongest part of Dallas’ offense is its running game. Ezekiel Elliott leads the league in rushing yards per game (95.6). Seattle is middle-of-the-pack in rushing defense, ranked 13th in rushing yards allowed per game (113.2).
Dallas hasn’t done a good job at protecting Dak Prescott. The Cowboys have allowed the second-most sacks in the league (56). Seattle is tied for 11th in sacks (43).
Seahawks vs. Cowboys betting odds
The Cowboys are two-point favorites at home. The over/under is set at 43.5 points.

The Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans had similar regular seasons. Both teams had rocky starts to the year — Colts (1-5) and Texans (0-3) — before going on impressive winning streaks.

Before it was all said and done, the divisional foes from the AFC South each finished with 10 or more wins. The Texans (11-5) did manage to edge out the Colts (10-6) by one game, but the two regular-season matchups between them were split 1-1.

What’s makes things more interesting is that both teams won on the road by exactly three points. Does that mean that Indianapolis actually has the advantage in this game despite having to travel to NRG Stadium in Houston?

While these two teams have faced each other 34 times because they are division rivals, this will be their postseason encounter.

Indianapolis at Houston

Kickoff: Saturday, Jan. 5 at 4:35 p.m. ET

TV: ESPN/ABC

Spread: Houston -1.5

1. Andrew Luck vs. Deshaun Watson, Part III

The flow of the regular season isn’t the only thing the Colts and Texans have in common. As opposed to the other two teams in the AFC South, the two making an appearance in the playoffs have a consistent, franchise quarterback in place.

In other words, the most important position on the field is already taken care of, which makes a path to the postseason a lot easier.

The statistical success that each of these quarterbacks has seen against the other’s defense is fairly significant. Luck has thrown for 863 yards and six touchdowns while only tossing one interception in the first two meetings. Watson hasn’t been quite that impressive, but he’s still put up 719 total yards (642 passing, 77 rushing) and four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing). The Clemson product has also completed 70 percent of his passes over those two performances.

If either team’s quarterback struggles, that could cause a lopsided victory in the other’s favor.

2. Which team’s offensive line can hold up the best?

If there’s one stark difference between the Colts and the Texans, it’s been the performance of the offensive lines. Indianapolis made a commitment in the offseason to get more protection for Luck, while the Texans – for the most part – continued to neglect the issue after missing out on left tackle Nate Solder in free agency.

The results have been significant, especially in the two matchups that these teams have already had. Quenton Nelson and Braden Smith have contributed to a unit that went on a five-game streak without giving up a sack. Against Houston, the Colts yielded did four sacks in the first game, but only surrendered two in the second.

Houston’s offensive line has been the polar opposite. On the season, this group has given up 62 sacks, which is the most in the NFL. Included in those were 12 courtesy of Indianapolis in just two games with Denico Autry (four), Darius Leonard and Margus Hunt (two each) particularly involved. Some of those fall on Watson holding onto the ball for too long, but there’s no doubt this unit is one of – if not – the worst in the league.

3. Colts have been hotter down the stretch

Houston and Indianapolis went toe-to-toe for the second time back in Week 14. It was a hard-fought battle, but the Colts left NRG Stadium with a 27-24 win.

Since then, they’ve outscored their opponents by an average score of 28-15. Included in that stretch was a 23-0 home shutout of NFC East champion Dallas. And Indianapolis punched its playoff ticket with a 16-point road win in Tennessee in Week 17 that pushed Luck’s record to 11-0 against the Titans during his career.

With four straight wins, the Colts and the Chicago Bears have the longest current winning streaks in the NFL, so Indianapolis could be viewed as one of the most dangerous teams in the AFC bracket. Houston’s success shouldn’t be ignored, however. Despite losing 32-20 in Philadelphia in Week 16, the Texans went 10-2 after starting the season 0-4. They closed out the regular season with a convincing 20-3 victory over the Jaguars.

It’s going to be interesting to see which team continues to carry its momentum into this game.

Houston Texans vs Indianapolis Colts Free Online Live
Final Analysis

This game should be one of the better ones during Wild Card Weekend. It features a pair of division rivals, led by two high-profile quarterbacks going head-to-head to determine whose team gets to keep its Super Bowl hopes alive.

Can J.J. Watt, Jadeveon Clowney and the rest of Houston’s defensive front seven be the difference-maker in this game? Forcing Indianapolis’ offense to being one-dimensional hasn’t exactly put a strain on Andrew Luck this season, but the playoffs are a different style of football.

At the end of the day, the Colts do a better job of protecting their franchise signal-caller and give him enough time to make plays. The over/under has steadily increased to 48.5, which seems to be a hair too much, especially since I think the road team ends up winning.

Prediction: Colts 27, Texans 21

Los Angeles Chargers at Denver Broncos

When and Where: Sunday, Dec. 30, Broncos Stadium at Mile High, Denver, Colo., 4:25 p.m. EST.

The Los Angeles Chargers make their play for the AFC West title and potentially home-field advantage throughout the playoffs Sunday when they close the regular season on the road against the Denver Broncos.

The Chargers (11-4) at worst will be the top wild card in the AFC, but a victory coupled with a Kansas City Chiefs loss to the Oakland Raiders would make them the No. 1 seed in the conference and send the AFC playoffs through Carson, California.

Chargers focused on task at hand after humbling loss
Los Angeles (11-4) missed out controlling its own destiny last weekend after arguably its worst performance of the season, a 22-10 setback to Baltimore on Dec. 15. The Chargers were held to a season-low 198 yards and committed a season-worst three turnovers, one of which resulted in a defensive touchdown by the Ravens in the fourth quarter that consigned them to defeat.

That loss, along with their 23-22 setback at home to the Broncos in Week 11 that account for Los Angeles’ only two defeats in the last 12 games, has led to a renewed focus on the things the Chargers themselves can control.

“Worry about us.”

— Los Angeles Chargers (@Chargers) December 27, 2018

“Let’s focus on us, get back to playing the way we’ve played most of this year,” Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers told the Los Angeles Times. “Offensively, we’ve got plenty of things to work on this week.”

Los Angeles Chargers vs Denver Broncos Free Online Live Stream
One thing is getting top running back Melvin Gordon III back into game shape for the postseason. Gordon had 12 carries for 41 yards in the loss to Baltimore in his first action after missing four games with a knee injury.

While it may be too big an ask for Gordon to get the 157 yards he needs for a second straight season with 1,000, he is the key cog to a ground game that averages 117.1 yards and was held to 85 in two of the four games he did not play.

On the defensive side, Joey Bosa is quickly making up for lost time and has recorded all of his 4.5 sacks — good for second on the Chargers — in the last five games after missing the first 10 with a foot injury.

The 37-year-old Rivers is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career with 4,132 yards passing and 31 TDs. He needs three scoring tosses to match his career high of 34 set in 2008 and has an outside chance to set a new personal best for completion percentage. Rivers, who has a 68.8 percent rate this season, set his career standard at 69.5 in 2013.
